BARN COLLAPSE
WEMA DART Responded at midnight to the tornado damage in Trousdale County, TN. WEMA K-9 Search and Rescue teams were searching for survivors and came across a barn that had collapsed and numerous sheep were trapped inside. DART was immediately deployed and arrived on the scene around 0130 hours. Approximately 26 sheep were still trapped inside the barn.
Rescue efforts began and continued for two hours. A second line of storms came through the area and the team staged back at the command post until daybreak. At daybreak, the team returned to the site with extra tools and volunteers and while efforts continued by SAR teams, the remaining sheep were extricated from the barn collapse. During the extrication process a newborn lamb was discovered with the umbilical cord still freshly attached. Shortly after another sheep was freed that turned out to be the lamb's mother and they were reunited.
All sheep were turned over to the Son of the Owner who wa son site and assisting with rescue efforts. Twenty sheep were rescued and six were found deceased. At the completion of this mission WEMA DART returned to Wilson County for more supplies and personnel and then deployed upon request of Tennessee State Agriculture Department on behalf of the Macon County Emergency Management Agency to Macon County (Lafayette, TN).
